Speaker's BiographyNow retired, my career was mostly in advertising on the creative side as a copywriter. After this I switched to video production, - writing, directing and filming historical documentaries. If you go to Bodiam Castle in Sussex, the Nothe Fort in Weymouth, or the Ironbridge Gorge near Telford, you will see introductory videos produced by me. I have also made many videos for the Tank Museum at Bovington. In recent years, I have become more interested in history, particularly Ancient Egypt. To understand this culture better, I learned how to understand and translate Egyptian hieroglyphs. Of course, the real value of this is not just the academic learning of a language, but the insight it gives into the way the Egyptians thought - about life , the gods and - especially - the afterlife. Hieroglyphs are beautiful and colourful and - it may surprise people - quite easy to learn
TalkDurationSummary
The Mystery & Magic of Egyptian HieroglyphsOne hour. But can be 15 minutes shorter or longer. My talk shows how Egyptian hieroglyphs were the world's first form of writing, cleverly using pictures of everyday objects, birds, animals, tools, buildings etc to construct words. Which actually makes it surprisingly easy to learn once you have the 'key.' I describe how this key was lost for 2,000 years after the fall of the Ancient Egyptian and only rediscovered by the work of an Englishman called Thomas Young, and a Frenchman called Jean-Francois Champollion. My presentation is gloriously illustrated throughout, using original paintings from tombs, temples, coffins and papyrus., showing famous Pharaohs, Queens and, of course, many gods
