The Rothschild Country Houses.
Starts 5th October 2022, 10.00 a.m. – Midday. 10 weeks.
In the 19th Century the Rothschild family built seven country houses in the Vale of Aylesbury. Some of these are well known, like Waddesdon, others are almost forgotten, like Aston Clinton, but each was the centre of an agricultural estate and housed important collections. The unusual, for England, pattern of inheritance which the Rothschild family followed enabled different members of the family to have the funds necessary for this. This course will look at the artistic, social and economic importance of these houses and set them in context with other Victorian Country Houses. (£80).
